Pick Your Trade
An HVAC company, a plumbing company and a roofing company don't run on the same numbers. So we didn't write one page and swap the words. Each page below is built for one trade.
If you want the general case for a fractional CFO in home services, that’s on the homepage. This page has one job, which is getting you to the page written for how your business actually works.
Four trades. Four pages. Pick yours.
WHY ONE PAGE PER TRADE
HVAC, plumbing, electrical and roofing don't break the same way.
One line each. The detail lives on the page behind it.
HVAC. Seasonality, maintenance agreements you got paid for but haven’t earned yet, and an install-to-service mix where one department quietly carries the other.
Plumbing. A service book and a construction book that behave like two different companies, with emergency dispatch and truck stock caught in between.
Electrical. Service work that pays weekly next to project work that pays on retainage, and estimates that are either a financial control or a guess.
Roofing. Storm revenue and retail revenue booked the same way, so a good year looks like skill when it was weather.
WHO THIS IS FOR
Between $3M and $15M, in any of the four.
Below $3M the owner still sees every number in the business and a good bookkeeper is the right next hire, not a CFO. Above $15M the company needs a finance lead in the building every day.
In between is where the numbers get too big to hold in your head and too small to justify a full-time executive. That is the same band in every trade on this page.
Run two of these under one roof? Even better fit. Job one is a separate P&L for each trade, so you can finally see which one is making the money.
Outside that range
Under $3M: a bookkeeper who closes on time and a rate built on real burden will do more than a CFO will.
Over $15M: the reporting has to be daily and in-house, and the right hire is a full-time controller or CFO.
