The Hardest Problems in Your Business Aren't on the Jobsite.
They're Hiding in Your Numbers.
I’m Tyler Martin, Fractional CFO for Home Services. I grew a services company to $25 million in annual revenue before selling it, and I also built and sold a CPA firm. Today I help HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and other trades owners make better decisions using cash flow, profit, and the numbers they already have.
You didn’t get into this business to run a spreadsheet.
Sound familiar?
- Cash is tight some weeks even though sales are up.
- Your bookkeeper does the entries but nobody’s telling you what they mean.
- You’re guessing at what to charge, who to hire next, and whether you can afford that truck.
- The CPA shows up at tax time and that’s it.
- You haven’t seen a clean balance sheet in a year, maybe ever.
That’s the gap I fill.
FRACTIONAL CFO SERVICES
Built for home services owners between $3M and $15M.
This isn’t a Big 4 deck factory. It’s a working CFO in your corner a couple times a month, asking the right questions, cleaning up the books, and making sure you know exactly what your numbers are telling you before you make the next move.
Here is what we actually do together.
Clean books, on time.
Month-end close by the 10th. Real accrual accounting. A balance sheet you can actually read. ServiceTitan and QuickBooks talking to each other instead of fighting.
Cash flow you can see coming.
Forecasts that look 13 weeks out, not 13 days. So you know whether you can make payroll, buy the truck, and pay the tax bill, before the question gets scary.
Numbers that drive a decision.
Weekly gross profit. Real labor burden. Pricing tied to actual cost data. Job costing that tells you which jobs to take more of and which to walk away from.
Boring but effective. That’s the point.
CLEAN DATA AT THE SOURCE
We don’t just read the numbers. We fix the source.
- QuickBooks Online setup and cleanup
- QuickBooks Desktop to Online migration, without losing your history
- ServiceTitan and other field software wired to QuickBooks so they stop fighting
- Invoices, payments, inventory, payroll, and job costs flowing correctly end to end
- Operational reports reconciled against the accounting so the two actually agree
- Financial reports you can trust enough to make a decision on
Because if the data is wrong, every KPI, dashboard, and forecast is wrong too.
PROOF
What changes when the numbers get clean.
Every business is different. The pattern isn’t.
CLIENT RESULT
From down 40% to up 6%, in a year.
A year later they were up 6%, which in that market and that economy was a turnaround. Boring but effective.
A few more from the file.
Built for scale.
A trades client came to me at $2M. Today he's around $8M with the infrastructure in place to push toward $20M. CRM rebuilt to handle growth. Class reporting set up so we can see profitability by division. Forecasting that runs out far enough to actually steer with.
Cash flow you can see coming.
A $15M multi-trade HVAC shop came in with the books in shambles. Months of cleanup, then we built out projections that actually meant something. The owner went from guessing at next quarter to running the business with a real forward view.
Numbers that drive a decision.
One client hadn't touched their billable rate in years. We calculated what the rate should actually be, accounting for the things most owners miss. Real overhead. Real profit target. And debt service, which almost nobody factors in. New rate, new conversation about what each job is actually worth.
FROM THE PODCAST
What the best operators in the trades will tell you.
On Profit and Grit, I sit down with the owners other owners want to learn from. Mark Paup answered a newspaper classified at 24, couldn’t afford the down payment, and 27 years later runs a $30M+ plumbing, HVAC, and electrical company across three markets. Darren Yarbrough‘s family broke through the $5M ceiling that had held them for seven years by getting the owner out of the tool bag and onto the org chart. Lawrence Castillo took Brody Pennell from $6M and 34 employees to $70M and 150+, and he’ll tell you the difference between operators who break through and ones who don’t isn’t talent or market. It’s the willingness to rebuild the company every time you double.
These aren’t influencers. They’re operators who’ve done the work, and you can learn from them.
Between Profit and Grit and the show I hosted before it, I’ve sat across from hundreds of multi-million dollar business owners. When you’ve had that many honest conversations, patterns show up. The same five or six things separate the operators who break through from the ones who don’t. That’s the experience I bring to client work.

ABOUT TYLER
The financial mind. The operator chair. Both sides of the desk.
I’m Tyler Martin. I’m a California-licensed CPA, and before I was a fractional CFO I spent a decade running a services firm I helped scale to $25 million in revenue and sold. I built a CPA firm from scratch and sold that too. So when I sit across from a service business owner and we’re staring at the same P&L, I’m not pulling theory out of a textbook. I know what it feels like to sweat a Friday payroll. I know what it costs to make the wrong hire. I know the long arc of building something worth selling.
Over the last five years I’ve interviewed hundreds of multi-million dollar business owners on the Profit and Grit podcast and the show I hosted before it. I’ve spent years inside the books of HVAC, plumbing, and electrical shops between $3M and $15M. I’ve seen the patterns. I know the playbook. I know what works and what doesn’t.
That experience is why I work the way I work. I don’t hand owners a 40-page report and disappear until next month. I sit down with you, walk through the numbers in plain language, and we make the next decision together. Think of me as a sparring partner, not a consultant.
I work with home services owners across the country. I host the Profit and Grit podcast. I live in Northern California with my wife Sunisa and three rescue dogs, Toby, Wiggles, and Stormy.
If you’re running a $3M to $15M home services business and you’re tired of guessing, let’s talk.
